On 5th January 2019, Manchester United faced Reading in front of there home crowd for the FA Cup third round clash. Manchester United under José Mourinho was more than a formidable opponent for the Championship side, especially on papers. But for the red devils, goals were hard to come by this season and because of which their defense was exposed quite often. It was the same story for this match too. At half time, Manchester United lead by two goals but the performance was not at all convincing. Then a substitution happened at the 62-minute mark. The ovation was huge, an atmosphere surrounded the stadium, which was missing until then. It felt as if a big name signing or a club legend was stepping on the field of the Theatre of Dreams. But it was a young boy with a slim body frame and afro hair coming to play a part in the match. Tahith Chong was his name.
The 28 minutes Chong got brought a feeling of excitement to the fans. United supporters always craved for an attacking right winger. Someone who could replicate the performance that Cristiano Ronaldo did for them on the left. They wanted someone to bring flair back in the team which was missing since the time the Manchester United legend has departed.
Chong was involved in the UEFA Champions League squad against Juventus but never got the chance to show his talent on the field and was made to warm the bench. Finally, the moment happened. After showing some glimpses of genius, he finally was awarded the much-deserved first-team opportunity.
Just six days after the match against reading, another moment of resemblance between the youngster and the icon came in the under-23 level match between Manchester United and Fulham. He scored with a free kick in the top left corner. The dip and curl produced resembled the technique Ronaldo mastered.
Tahith Chong was born in Willemstad, Curaçao but later moved to the Netherlands. He started his international career in 2013 by playing for the Dutch under-15 side. Chong can also represent Curaçao internationally for it being his birthplace.
The 19-year-old is currently a Manchester United player who professionally signed a contract with them in July 2018. Chong joined the academy in 2016 after leaving Feyenoord for better opportunities.
Chong is a left-footer who plays preferably on the right as a winger but is versatile enough to be deployed anywhere in the front three.
