Real World Project Management Cases Analysis
Project management applies to many different fields and allows people to develop the skills to manage all aspects of a project, program, and portfolio. It has become a key implemented in today’s business because in “today’s business environment, organizational leaders need to be able to manage with tighter budgets, shorter timelines, scarcity of resources, and rapidly changing technology” (Meredith, Mantel Jr., & Shafer, 2017). After reading three different cases from Project management in practice (Meredith, Mantel Jr., & Shafer, 2017), I believe all cases describe project works or operational activities.
There are several successful business companies caused by these cases. In addition, these companies have succeeded in its original aims and been used in project management as an important tool with both sciences and arts.
The first case of Handstart Inc. describes the operational activity. I have noticed Handstar Inc. was a company started with only ten employees as an expense report app and its real-world business stories give examples of how they grow their marketing and how they expand their apps’ capabilities by updating their new apps.
Comparing to the production of food products, such as bread at Safeway, the similarities between Handstar Inc. and Safeway are updating their new products and grow their users. The differences between them are the plans to purchase the company’s marketing goals. The plan that Handstar Inc. uses is to develop its software, but the plan that Safeway uses is mostly to focus on their customers who want to buy bread daily. Roger Lekberg, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain for Safeway said, “A crucial goal for Safeway is to be as flexible as possible when dealing with partners, while always maintaining focus on the Safeway shopper”. The concept of quasi-project is their three projects.
Handstart Inc. uses these three projects to keep the balance of development and evaluation. The three projects are to “create current calendar app with its email app, update the expense report app, and enhancing the existing portfolio tracking app” (Meredith, Mantel Jr., & Shafer, p. 30-31, 2017). From the company’s operation activities, I think it is clear to tell that their operators care about the original design ideas and actual operation process to express.
The Quantum Bank
The second case of The Quantum bank describes project works. The reasons I think this case shows more project works because the company builds more opportunities for its employee like Bill Fence and Andy Dover. From their business stories, I understand that project work helps he or she, who works on a project, to provide learning process and earn working experiences by getting into real-world cases and situations and solving problems of the projects. Comparing to the production of food produces, for instance, Coca-Cola at Costco, The Quantum Bank also share the same business tips of “both traditional and nontraditional organizations” (Meredith, Mantel Jr., & Shafer, p. 68, 2017). However, The Quantum Bank provides its products by linking social services.
The Coca-Cola produces its products by connecting partners. The concept of quasi-project of The Quantum bank is to develop the company’s candidates. According to Fence and Dover’s experience at Quantum, they gained skills in management, leadership, and technical abilities quickly during their working years. It is important to give professional training and discover talents in the company in the beginning while cultivating them.
John Wiley & Son
The third case of John Wiley & Son describes both project works and operational activities because this company has its developed products in details and operations in different countries around the world. Comparing to the production of food produces, such as ice cream at Walmart, John Wiley & Sons has developed education their books and online reading products. A food company or an ice cream shop sales products mostly in-store because ice cream can be melted or expired. However, John Wiley & Son can do both in the store business and online sales. In addition, publishing educational products work internationally.
People can easily get the books or online journeys through the Internet around the world. The concept of quasi-product of John Wiley & Son is their active and available textbooks, journeys, and CDs by the network. Online educational products save time and bring value to schools, communities, and educational organizations because they provide an easy and best way from the traditional state of using hard copies to a future state of using electronic products.
