"Paths of Glory (1957)" Movie Review Essay & Film Analysis

Perhaps the most favorite topics from Kubrick is sex and war. Love and hate, speaking poetically, cruelty and lust, if unvarnished. It's two oldest human instincts that accompany the human race for thousands of years. If Kubrick apex of the first theme was the movie "Eyes Wide Shut", the second is a uniquely "Paths of Glory". In this film, based on a true story, Kubrick clothe all the ugliness of war and man's place on the battlefield. To do this, it shows a development on three levels.
First, it is a war for the generals and big personalities. They drive on the beautiful cars, drink elite drinks, in the palaces of discussing the fate of the soldiers. They say, as some game, for example, the phrase
«The main thing is not to overdo it, I think, a dozen is enough», we are talking about the soldiers who are ready for death. The phrase easy to say, with a smile on his face, and the other party to the conversation sensitively responded
«It was about a hundred." snickering command does not put into something a human life, for them it is only fighting units, calculated as a percentage. Generals themselves to achieve a victory, not for the defeat of the enemy, but for the sake of their own ranks. General Brular not understand that Colonel Dax unselfishly tries to rescue the soldiers, and to condemn Paul Miro in the name of justice. Bluar sees this calculation in place of General, and even praises the Dax for it, which causes the latter rage. These high-ranking officials have already left a handful of conscience, they do not sit in the trenches under the weight of bullets and bombs, they even forgot to fight against anyone. They have their battlefield. Where every man for himself. They smile in your face, but do think about how to get your post. Perhaps this part, where it was not in the best light exposed to the French command, and caused the ban to be shown in France for many years. But it's not specifically about France, in Russia think differently? So in any country, the soldiers own war, in their own generals.
second level, it is a war for the common people. Paul Miro quietly passes through the trenches and shell-shocked soldier despises, calling him a coward. General there will be a maximum one day before the operation, when a soldier has yet to be a long time to watch the death. Miro will sit in a trench, when the soldiers go into battle. They are sent on an impossible mission. Wade through a hail of bullets and bombs, and not the fact that even though someone may be, comes to the end. In this part of the film, Kubrick shows his talent to take large-scale scenes. Moment from going to the battle the soldiers can be called one of the best in his career. Here, the director makes the viewer feel like a battlefield. And to understand why the soldiers did not come out of the trenches. This inspirational patriotic films fleeing soldiers without weapons to certain death, shouting "For the motherland," or the like. It is easy to say, "I give my life for my country!" The officers, but when you're hiding in a puddle of mud and blood around the meat pieces, yesterday call themselves men, and with hail bombs sky world as it is changing and replacing heroism comes complete natural reaction of self-preservation. Where to go?! Ahead of a barrage of bullets, explosions, a wall of fire, I'm sorry, but to die for the sake of the uniforms superiors as you do not want.
Another detail that is important. Not shown no enemy, only bombs from the sky, but the generals who gave the order to destroy their same troops. This director emphasizes the futility and the fog of war. After all, where soldiers are fleeing? Over the hill the enemy who wants to destroy your country, or simply a precipice? In fact, there is your reflection. The same soldiers who are the same generals in the name of his epaulettes give unrealistic orders. And if you think about it you realize that you're not a damn thing the hero and killer. And what then morale?
third level, it is an absurd war. In this part all over the felt ironic director (especially saturated with black humor scene, after a heroic speech Dax). After the failed operation, you need to find scapegoats, and it clearly will not be generals. First, we are talking to shoot a good example to others, a hundred soldiers, and then the number goes up to ten, and then to three. So that's great! That even mean the death of three people, they are the outcome of the war did not change, but the rest of the soldiers will be taught a lesson. So says Gen. Paul. But Colonel Dax. He becomes the last hope for the salvation of men from the bullets of the enemy and their own countrymen. This character Kirk Douglas was in the previous two levels of the picture, but then it becomes the most prominent role. Duet Kubrick and Douglas, created a real hero. Without pathos and embellishment. A man who has not lost his mind and conscience, in this war. For which a simple soldier, still remains a life, not a combat unit.
Dax became a lawyer at the trial of three soldiers who fell by accident here. One of them showed heroism, and until recently was trying to save his colleague lying when senior officer (who sent a soldier to death) a coward, and was the cause of death was lying. Now, this soldier is awaiting trial, he was accused of cowardice and going to be sentenced to death. This whole charade court only. All have been solved, but the colonel desperately trying to achieve justice in the stale and rotten stationery rats. In this part we see a truly awful side of the war. People are no longer in the trenches, around no bombs, but they are still in danger.
«They are afraid of the German bullets, will receive the French." Well it turns out? Will not die from enemy bullets, be sure to die from a bullet compatriot? Yes. It's like that. Again, not only in France since the first world was. Remember World War II in the USSR, where the NKVD shot retreating back. War is the same everywhere, whether it be France, USA, Russia, England or any other country.
Each of these levels Kubrick showed the most significantly. War as a way to earn ranks as a business (say what the Joker in "Full Metal Jacket") war as blood, violence, grief, cowardice, hypocrisy, and is simply an appearance primal human instincts. And not even the main thing in this movie than a war, and who is a simple man in this war. For what soldiers must run on the enemy bayonet? Aware of this high office. They walk along the paths, consisting of just such a soldier. Go to the titles, orders, and big money. That is, the path of glory.
