"Killer M (1931)" Movie Review Essay & Film Analysis

When it comes to the film by Fritz Lang's "M", usually they talk about it in two ways: as the first sound film and Lang as the first thriller about a serial maniac
This film is about a man who kills little girls.. This alone makes the viewer to strain. However, for such a simple and scary synopsis lies a plurality of parallel lines and semantic load. The girls disappear. Then their bodies are in series. Killer can not find. City panics. Parents can not keep up with their offspring. Finally, the killer himself writes anonymous letters to the police and in the newspaper, promising new victims. Police, not knowing what to do, round up all in a row, hoping to chance. Various analysts are trying to create a psychological portrait of a maniac, hoping it would somehow help to catch him. Ordinary citizens, in turn, see the killer in each random (and not only) counter. They begin to suspect even familiar, seeking to arrange a lynching of anyone who seemed suspicious of anyone to speak in the street with a little girl. On the capture of one person already directed all possible resources: even crime syndicates are beginning to unite in order to catch the killer - because of constant police raids affected their business. To business connects even the bottom of society caught in a trap: a crowd of beggars, homeless, prostitutes - people able to discreetly monitor any passers
In all this panic melteshne reveals plenty of social and cultural and other semantic poddekstov.. How helpless is still running smoothly, "robust" system to a single person - unable to control unwell person, crazy killer who find themselves a member of this society! How scary to live in this society, each of its members! Various government agencies are attacking each other, accusing them of incompetence, that they are not doing enough to catch this monster in a human form. And listening to their reasons and arguments, you realize that each of them in its own right. And that is why they will never understand and hear each other. Everyone has what is to blame each other, and each has something to say in his own defense. And, despite the horror of the events taking place around Lang ironically reveals the imperfect state system, artfully combining the disputes in the offices with the discussions in the headquarters of gangs.
As for the main character of this story, it appears on the screen only after half an hour after the start of the film, and begins to actively take part in the action, and the closer to the middle of the picture. We see before us a completely insane person, brilliantly played great Peter Lorre. His passion for the murder of little girls similar to the disease as soon as he saw the girl, he was no longer control himself and completely given to his monstrous vice
Since this is, as already mentioned, the first sound picture luminary of German silent film by Fritz Lang, it is a lot. It is experimenting with sound, making it one of the key means of artistic impact on the viewer. For example, one of the major plot twists associated with the capture of the villain, is based on the sound. Cinematography, playing with light and bright sign-mime actor's game still come out of the silent film. The two-hour film, a lot of dumb scenes, not accompanied by any sound at all, which, together with the main, laid-back, but incredibly intense, spectacular actions have a special impact on the viewer.
«M» is also interesting in that it is, roughly speaking, a thriller about a serial killer (although, to be honest, the picture is quite difficult to define the genre), which does not shed a drop of blood, there is no pursuit and no masterly detective to unravel the tangle of mysteries. Means, which uses Lang, simple and minimalist. Little girl. Ball. Shadow man in the hat. Whistling overs Edvard Grieg. So from the girl was only a ball. And it becomes really scary
Our killer - and he, by the way, has a name:. Hans Beckert - is one big flaw, it's awful to his absolute moral monotony. He - the absolute, deep, relentless, uncontrollable evil, evil that lives in each of us, but, in the case of Beckert, completely filled his soul and mind. It is interesting that, in the presence of antagonist, the protagonist in the film is absent. Or you can call the protagonist of his own - Beckert, killer
Without exaggeration brilliant finale raises major moral issue picture: who has the right to judge this person? Thieves and murderers? The servants of the law? Mother of dead girls? Who will be able to return their daughters? And what punishment he deserves? These (and many other unvoiced me) questions ger Lang offers us the answer on their own, taking a picture of nowhere
«M» Fritz Lang -. An absolute masterpiece, mandatory to all and sundry. And this can not be prepared. The film hits you in the head and in the end, leads to a knockout many times.
